Poetry-Music Reading Series hosted by Brant Lyon with the Hydro Juke improv band, The Ne'er-do-wells


HYDROGEN JUKEBOX, the poetry and music series instigated and hosted by Brant Lyon at Cornelia Street Café, in collaboration with RCINY, presents during this year's PEN World Voices, THE ROMANIACS: SAVIANA STANESCU, IOANA NICOLAIE, and SHARON MESMER, a trio of internationally celebrated poets who will rock the stage with house improv band THE NEERDOWELLS and BRANT LYON joining in the set. Plus Open Mic (arrive early to make the list). 

Ioana Nicolaie‘s debut collection of poems, Retouched Photograph was published in 2000, followed by Faith (2003, nominated Bucharest Writers’ Assoc. Prize), The North (2005, nominated for the ASPRO Prize), Belly Heaven (2005), Centotaph (2006), and The Adventures of Arik (2008). Her poems have been translated into German, and anthologized in France, Britain, Canada, Bulgaria, Austria, Sweden, and the U.S. Read more

Saviana Stanescu is a Romanian-born poet and playwright.
Plays: Aliens With Extraordinary Skills (produced by Women's Project in NYC and Teatro la Capilla in Mexico City, published by Samuel French), Waxing West (2007 New York Innovative Theatre Award for Outstanding Script). Poetry collections: "Google Me", "Diary of a clone", "Making Love on the Barbed Wire", "Advice for housewives and muses", "The Outcast". Saviana’s poems have appeared in Poetry London, Exquisite Corps, Absinthe, Talisman, etc., and have been performed all over Europe and the U.S. She teaches drama at NYU, Tisch. saviana.com

Sharon Mesmer’s most recent poetry collections are The Virgin Formica (Hanging Loose 2008) and Annoying Diabetic Bitch (Combo Books 2008). Fiction collections are Ma Vie à Yonago (in French translation from Hachette Littératures 2005) and In Ordinary Time and The Empty Quarter (Hanging Loose 2005 and 2000). She performs her work in the U.S. and internationally, and teaches graduate and undergrad writing and literature at the New School in NYC. virginformica.blogspot.com
