“After the fall: Reality and the New Romanian Theatre”
New Drama support program
This unique series of events brings to New York City three of Romania's most important emerging playwrights, Gianina Carbunariu, Bogdan Georgescu and Vera Ion, along with Bucharest-based Romanian culture journalist Iulia Popovici and Dr. Nicolae Mandea, Professor of Playwriting at the National University of Theatre & Cinematography in Bucharest. Curated by Roberta Levitow and Marcy Arlin, this series of free staged readings, lectures and presentations provides a medium for artistic conversation and exchange between American playwrights, artistic directors, theatre journalists and professors with their counterparts in Romania.
Staged reading of STOP THE TEMPO, by Gianina Carbunariu, directed by Melanie Sutherland followed by Q & A with Dr. Mandea & Iulia Popovici, moderated by Marcy Arlin & dramaturge Saviana Stanescu. STOP THE TEMPO is a searing and funny look at contemporary life in Romania seen through the eyes of three young people who meet accidentally and join forces in unexpected acts of resistance.
RED BULL by Vera Ion, directed by Marcy Arlin and ROMANIAN.KISS ME by Bogdan Georgescu, directed by Kaipo Schwab. Moderated by Roberta Levitow & dramaturge Saviana Stanescu. RED BULL chronicles the chance encounters of two young people, slavishly working to survive while dreaming of the freedom that ultimately disappoints them. ROMANIA.KISS ME is the desperate journey of three voyagers on a train headed out of the country, accompanied by an "orchestra" of sounds and smells of home.
