Revisiting Cartarescu's Nostalgia READING THE TEA LEAVES: Revisiting Cartarescu's "Nostalgia"

If you are either a reader or already a fan of Cartarescu or, instead, in search for a literary feast to be surprised by, you'd be disappointed to miss the 'Reading the tea leaves' evening dedicated to the English edition of "Nostalgia" by Mircea Cartarescu, published in 2005 by New Directions (translation by Julian Semilian). Special guests Declan Spring, Senior Editor of New Directions, and Paul Doru Mugur, New York-based writer & editor of Respiro magazine, will be in dialogue about the book and its writer with Corina Suteu, RCINY director.

Mircea Cartarescu, born in 1956, is one of Romania's leading novelists and poets. This translation of his 1989 novel "Nostalgia", writes Andrei Codrescu, "introduces to English a writer who has always had a place reserved for him in a constellation that includes the Brothers Grimm, Franz Kafka, Jorge Luis Borges, Bruno Schulz, Julio Cortazar, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Milan Kundera, and Milorad Pavic, to mention just a few. (...)

Cartarescu (...) indulges in compassion and love for his former selves and is childlike (that is to say fierce) defender of both memory and the freedom to dream. He is curative because he gives you dreams and restores your faith in literature."
