Andrei Codrescu - Memories of Sibiu |
CANCELLED! Due to circumstances for which the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York takes full responsibility, the event scheduled for Friday, March 23, at 7 pm, at the RCI, has been cancelled. We apologize for any inconvenience we may have caused.
A European Romania in New York SIBIU: 1946-2007. AN EXERCISE ON THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY CARRIED OUT BY ANDREI CODRESCU Born in Sibiu, Romania in 1946 and emigrated to the United States in 1966, poet and essayist Andrei Codrescu proposes a personal view on a city that receives this year an impressive attention. The Romanian city of Sibiu has been appointed, together with Luxembourg, as one of the 2007 "European Cultural Capitals" that will make it the focus of the European attention and the host of an incredible array of artistic events throughout the year. For those that will thus visit the city, and more importantly for those that will not make it there soon, Andrei Codrescu offers an alternative to the traditional tours - a subjective guide of Sibiu, exploring and retracing Andrei Codrescu's literal and imaginary city, with impressions from the recent and not so recent past. The result of his visit, documented together with director Florentina Mocanu, will be available on a dedicated website this autumn. Before its launch however, Andrei Codrescu and Florentina Mocanu will reveal during the event hosted on March 23 by the Romanian Cultural Institute, some insights into HIS Sibiu. This project is made with the support of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York and Stanford University, Drama Department.
