Building News Versus Reporting Facts

BUILDING NEWS VERSUS REPORTING FACTS:
A DIALOGUE WITH JOURNALIST TRAIAN UNGUREANU

The Romanian Cultural Institute in New York hosts Romanian journalist Traian Ungureanu, one of the outstanding voices of Romanian political and sports journalism, for a dialogue with American journalists about how information builds the image of a country, and specifically that of Romania in the US.

Mr. Ungureanu will be joined by Joe Lauria, freelance journalist and UN Correspondent for numerous newspapers around the world, and J. Tuyet Nguyen, UN Correspondent for the DPA - German Press Agency. They will share their perspectives on how different countries are perceived abroad, how the media shapes coverage of various domestic and international topics, and how, according to press reports, the US and the EU are perceived by the international public opinion.

Traian Ungureanu recalls his personal journalistic experience in examining the ways a country like Romania endeavors to present a contemporary image of itself to the world at large, as well as strategies for approaching narrative in news and media. The panel discussion will include a presentation of books by Mr. Ungureanu published in 2006 by Humanitas Publishing House, Bucharest, which include "The Romanian Art of Helplessness", "The War Of The Ages - Western Decline and Islamic Siege", and "On Securitate - Romania The "As If" Country" (photo)
Moderating the panel will be Corina Suteu, Director of the Romanian Cultural Institute in New York, and Filon Morar, Contributor to the Romanian magazine 22 and diplomat with the Permanent Mission of Romania to the UN.

This event launches the Building News program at the RCI, which promotes exchange between Romanian and American journalists.
