Contemporary Instrumental Music

Contemporary Instrumental Music of Romania: Mirror of Post-Communist Transition

Organized in collaboration with the George Enescu Society of the USA, at the initiative of violinist Sherban Lupu, the series of concerts is aimed at presenting to the American audience a glimpse of the Romanian contemporary music. After the Romanian revolution, music has transformed in a rapid rhythm, combining new sound experiments with traditional sources, like folk or Byzantine music.

This series of concerts will be performed by an ensemble of Romanian and American musicians: Sherban Lupu – violin, Steven Zynszajn – violin and viola, Enid Blount Press – clarinet, Dan Barrett – cello, Ju Ping Song – piano, Martha Locker – piano, Dinu Ghezzo – conductor.

Thursday, November 15, 7:30 pm: Liviu Dănceanu
– “Florilegium” for violin, cello and clarinet; Doina Rotaru – “Smoke” for clarinet solo; Sabin Pautza – Two Preludes for clarinet and piano; Dinu Ghezzo – “Imaginary Voices” for clarinet, cello and piano; Irina Hasnas – “The Rooster” (Vestitorul Luminii) for clarinet, violin and piano; Cornel Ţăranu – Sonata “Rubato” for solo violin; Dinu Ghezzo – “Shadow Dances” for chamber orchestra

Friday, November 16, 7:30 pm: Theodor Grigoriu – Sonata for violin and piano; Livia Teodorescu-Ciocănea –“Romulus and Remus” for two violins and piano; Violeta Dinescu – “Da Pacem” for violin, viola and cello; Paul Rogojină - “Sacred visions” for solo violin; Dan Dediu – “Don Giovanni/Juan, SonatOpera in due atti” op.53 for violin and piano.
