LEONARDO SILAGHI: Residence & Solo Show at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art
Based on the merit of original artwork that takes on the ghost trail of severe repression, the 22-year old Cluj-based artist Leonardo Silaghi has been selected to be artist-in-residence for the summer of 2010 at the highly vaunted Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art residency program. The HVCCA selects artists who have never before exhibited in the U.S. Each of them to date has received major critical support for the work exhibited at HVCCA as well as gallery representation in the U.S.
Silaghi's three-month residency, supported by RCINY, will culminate in a solo exhibit in the HVCCA upstairs gallery. Opening downstairs simultaneously on September 19 will be the main exhibit for the year – AFTER THE FALL – the work of 18 young artists from 7 countries in Eastern and Central Europe.
Silaghi’s large scale paintings are based on a photographic reality, which is later distilled by means of abstraction. This combination leads to images that are both indistinct and coherent at the same time. It is in this complex way that the artist easily crosses the line between abstract and figurative art.
Silaghi was born in Satu Mare, Romania and currently lives and works in Cluj, Romania. He studied at University of Art and Design in Cluj- Napoca and received his MA in painting at the same university. Silaghi had a recent exhibition at the Laika Gallery in Cluj.
