In Memoriam: Matei Calinescu On July 10, RCINY presents an evening dedicated to the memory of prominent Romanian-American writer and Professor Matei Calinescu, who recently passed away at the age of 75.

He was a Professor Emeritus of Comparative Literature and West European Studies at Indiana University, where he taught since arriving in the United States, in 1973, until his retirement. He lived in Bloomington, Indiana, but visited Romania on a regular basis after 1994.

He authored a series of important studies in English, among which "Five Faces of Modernity" (Duke UP, 1987) and "Rereading" (Yale UP, 1993), and edited a number of volumes, among which most recently Mircea Eliade’s "Youth without Youth", whose 2007 edition was published by the University of Chicago Press, with a foreword by Francis Ford Coppola. His latest volume to appear in English is "Matthew's Enigma – A Father’s Portrait of His Autistic Son", translated by Angela Jianu and published by Indiana UP in January, 2009.

Matei Calinescu also wrote numerous books of essays, poetry, memories and a novel-essay ("The Life and Opinions of Zacharias Lichter", 1969) – all published in Romanian over the past four decades.

Special guest of the evening will be Calin-Andrei Mihailescu, writer and Professor of Comparative Literature, Critical Theory, and Spanish at the University of Western Ontario in London, Canada.
